When someone leads with anime or Japanese animation in their profile, they're telling you this isn't a casual interest. It's a regular part of how they spend time and think about things. If she mentions a specific show, studio, or genre, that's your signal to ask about that exact thing, not anime in general.

She's probably had a lot of messages from people who watched one popular series and think they can bond with her over it. Or worse, people who don't watch anime at all but want to seem interesting. Read what she actually wrote. Is she into dark psychological shows, romance, action, slice of life? That detail matters because it tells you what kind of storytelling she responds to.

Skip the "I love anime too" opener unless you actually do watch regularly. Instead, pick one specific thing from her profile or your conversation and ask her about it directly. This does two things. First, it proves you read what she said instead of sending a copy-paste text to five people. Second, it puts her in the position of explaining something she cares about, which almost always makes someone want to keep texting.

The question should be one she can actually answer. Not "what anime should I watch" because that puts pressure on her to recommend something you might hate. If you're not a heavy anime watcher, something will come up where she goes deep on a show you haven't seen. That's actually fine. You have two moves here. One, ask a follow-up question that doesn't require you to have seen it. "What's the appeal of that character?" or "Why do you think that ending hit so hard?" keeps momentum going and lets her talk.

Two, be honest if she asks if you've watched something. "Not yet, but it's on my list" or "I haven't gotten to that one" is way better than pretending. It actually builds trust. What kills the conversation is ghosting when she assumes you know something you don't, or worse, making stuff up and getting caught.
