How to respond to one word texts from your ex who left you

A one word text from an ex who left you for someone else isn't a sign they want you back. They're testing whether you'll still engage with them. They're bored and want low-effort attention. Or they're being polite in a way that costs them nothing. The one word format is the tell. It requires almost no thought and gives you no opening for a real conversation. They're not reaching out to reconnect. They're reaching out to see if you're still available as an audience. This matters because it changes what you're actually responding to. You're not responding to their words. You're responding to the message underneath: that they think they can ping you whenever they want and you'll respond.

Your response has to do two jobs at once. First, it shows you didn't sit there refreshing your phone waiting for them. Send back something that assumes you were already doing something else when the text arrived. The tone should be relaxed and brief, as if you just glanced at your phone. Second, your reply has to close the door on the idea that you're available for crumbs. Do not ask a question back. Do not extend the conversation. Do not add emoji or exclamation marks that signal excitement. A good reply is a dead end. It's pleasant enough that they can't say you were cold, but it's so complete that there's nowhere for them to go next. They can't build a conversation on it. Test your draft by asking: could they easily send another one word text back to this? If yes, rewrite it.

Wait an hour or two, minimum. Not because you're playing games, but because responding instantly proves you were waiting. If you get the text at 2pm, send your reply at 4pm. After you send it, do not check whether they've read it or opened it or typed a response. Put your phone somewhere else. If they reply, the same rules apply. Brief, closed-ended, no questions. If they don't reply, that's the answer. Do not send another message. Do not try harder. The pattern you're setting is that you're fine either way, and you mean it by your actions, not your words. After three exchanges where they keep sending one word texts and you keep giving them nothing to work with, stop responding entirely. At that point you're just teaching them you're still there.
