Keep her engaged when she turns questions back on you

Most people ask about your day when they want to flip the power dynamic or need a break from being questioned. It can mean she's shy, tired, or checking whether you'll pursue her or move on. Some people do it on every first exchange. Some only when they're uncertain about you.

The thing is, you can't know which one it is from a single deflection. What matters is that you don't reward the dodge by launching into a monologue. That teaches her that deflecting works. Instead, treat it like a small reset. Give her something short and real, then steer toward a topic that actually matters. This shows you're willing to share, but you're not going to chase her through small talk.

Your reply needs to do two jobs. First, answer her question in one or two sentences. Keep it light and specific, not a whole story. Then, immediately pivot to something that gives her a real reason to engage. This could be a follow-up to something she mentioned earlier, an observation about something in her profile, or a low-stakes invitation to tell you something interesting about herself.

The pivot is the key move. Don't just answer and throw another question at her. Instead, say something that adds to the conversation. Reference something she said. Make an observation. Give her a reason to go deeper instead of deflecting again.

Send your reply within a few hours while the thread is still warm. Don't wait overnight when the context is fresh. Once it's sent, step back. She has a day or two to respond. If she deflects again in her next message, that's information. It tells you the conversation rhythm is off or she's not invested right now.

If she doesn't respond after two days, she's probably not going to. Don't send a follow-up. Move on. If she does respond with another deflection or short answer, you can try once more with a different angle. But after the second deflection without any real sharing from her, it's time to let this one cool.
